The area from Hallelujah Bay to
Portland Bill, locally known as West Cliff has many rocky marks
worth fishing but due to the height of the cliffs and dangerous
paths the advice of this website is not to attempt to fish this
area. There are very few deep water marks and the ground is very
broken and snaggy. The area around Blacknor Point and Mutton
Cove is very good for large Conger and recently local charter
boats have been coming in close following large shoals of
herring. The area is also a popular spot for scuba divers so be
careful.
To access the area wear good
quality walking boots. The easiest access is to park near to the
cliffs in Southwell on
Reap Lane and take the farm
track to the cliff edge. There is a path down to the sea
opposite the track. It can be a bit of a scramble in places so
be careful, make sure that you tell someone where you are going
and when you will be back. The coastguard are often called out
to search for people missing in this area.
Probably the best method to use
here is float fishing although it is well worth using rotten
bottom gear for the larger species such as Wrasse, Bass and
Pollack. Night time will see some good sport with Conger and
Huss.
