It is starting to look like 2007 will be a very strange year for sea fishing around Portland. The sea is only slightly warmer than previous years but the summer species seem to have stayed in fair numbers throughout the winter. During Christmas I was fishing in Chesil Cove in bitterly cold weather and a group of divers told me that the Cove was crawling with Smooth Hounds. We didn't catch any but a local fisherman gave us a couple of 5-6 pounders that he had caught in his net earlier.

A few weeks later in January I was in the Cove again during a winter storm and found many dead Trigger Fish washed up. They were a good size too but surely they should not have been here at this time of year. Now it is the third week of April and Mackerel have been caught in fair numbers along Chesil Beach and today I caught a couple of lovely Garfish while spinning near to Pulpit Rock.

What next....Barracuda?

This summer has seen massive numbers of Triggerfish off Chesil Beach with many specimens over 4lb. The usual marks produce fish on all baits and they are not at all fussy and often two or three fish being taken at a time giving an excellent fight. There are several local marks that will produce the goods at close range where the sport can be even better on light spinning gear with a ball lead sinker. It is beyond the remit of this website to give away the local hotspots so you will have to do some searching, but we will say that there are marks between the Masonic car park and Chesil Cove where Triggers can be caught easily within 100yds of the shore.

The number of sharks seen in Portland waters seems to be increasing year on year. This year there have been several sightings of Basking and Mako Sharks in the Portland Harbour and many reports of Porbeagles taking Mackerel baits and hooked fish from boat anglers lines. Porbeagles have often been seen chasing Bream as they are being retrieved, also many have been seen along Chesil Beach particularly towards the western end.

Weymouth has never been known as a shark fishing hotspot but maybe that is about to change, there are so many around this summer that maybe shark fishing is now a viable option for skippers looking to diversify, but please guys don't kill these beautiful creatures.
