Bass Fishing Report 22.05.09
We had a change of location as my son Tyler wanted to fish the
Fleet and Portland Harbour as he has done well there in the past. As we pulled
up up the car park at Bluewater Horizons we could see fish jumping 40yds out so
we set up the rods and Ty went fishing as I got my waders on. Within 30 seconds
of starting fishing he was into his first Bass and he had another before I had
my first cast!!! they were only schoolies but great fun. I started with home
made plugs but soon gave up and joined him on the home made krill lures that you
can see in the picture below. I couldn't catch any in the harbour so after his
third fish we crossed the road to try the sand flats between Ferry Bridge and
Chesil Beach car park where the bait diggers go. Once again Ty was into a fish
on his first catch. I was on a Chug Bug by this time as I was determined to
catch a bass on a plug, my chance came after about half an hour and several more
fish from Ty. I caught a small bass about 10" long on a home made silver and
black plug that I have just finished. then Ty caught the fish pictured, which
was the biggest of the evening and I swapped back onto the DIY krill lure and
caught two more. I lost a bigger fish of about 2lb and we ended the session with
10 bass to Tyler and 3 to me. I am now in for a weekend of him rubbing in how he
always out fishes me as he's only 13 and loves beating me.
Once again the DIY lures beat any other commercial lure in my arsenal as they
always do. The one pictured below is an old spoon handle with a couple of holes
drilled in it, hooks and split rings attached and bent into a shallow S shape to
make it wiggle in the water. I think there will be a re-match tomorrow in the
same spot as the fish were throwing themselves at the hook, well Tyler's anyway.
Oh and I forgot to mention that there were only two hooks on his treble as one
had snapped off!!!!!
Here's a picture from last year showing the home made lure better.
